La Calcina, Venice, Italy. This lovely, historic and value-oriented
hotel was the site of the pensione that welcomed the British art
historian John Ruskin in 1876. Lovingly restored over the years,
the books, paintings and many others objects belonging to the “old
Calcina”, are re-created today as in the past - a warm and welcoming
atmosphere rich of refinements and small, unexpected surprises.
La Calcina is located on the historic “Zattere”, one of the most
picturesque places in Venice. The incomparable view of the Giudecca
canal, the sun and lightof this spot give shelter to many Venetians
who choose to take a walk, even on the cold winter days. Each of
the hotel's 29 rooms are slightly different but they all have wooden
parquet flooring, furniture highlights from the old inn, bathroom,
air-conditioning, a telephone and a safe. The wonderful terrace-garden
on the Giudecca canal, offer meeting and refreshment-points. The
hotel is also re-opening the doors of its historic Cafè, known in
the past as “Vapore”, and now by the name of “La Piscina” - designed
with the welcoming ambience of an old Central European cafè and
where there is something good to eat available at all times of the
day. Excellent breakfast buffet.
