This 17th Century port city has a botanical garden, historic landmarks, bustling marketplace, cathedral.
La Soufriere
National Park and site of the volcano. Although dormant, its sporadic rumbles keep the islands' inhabitants on their toes. The park contains lovely nature trails - ideal for picnics. Addr: North of Basse-Terre.
Les Mamelles
A group of low mountains dotted with very good hiking paths. The views from Mamelle de Pigeon makes the climb a memorable experience. Addr: Southern coast on La Traversee.
Iles des Saintes
These eight small islands just off the coast offer interesting diversions for the curious traveler. Many are lightly inhabited and all possess lovely beaches. Check with the tourist office on the mainland for information guides and ferry schedules.
