Sporting Life In Martinique

Sailing
Sunfish, sailfish, hobie cats and windsurfing can be secured on almost any of the island's beaches. Yacht sailing, catamarans or motorboats can be rented at the island's largest outfit ATM (Ph: 596-749817) in Le Marin. Bambou Yachting (Ph: 596-624657) in Le Marin has a catamaran fleet and Ecole Nautisme Accastillage's (Ph: 596-651818), in Le Robert, specialty is motorboats. If scheduled, don't miss the high-speed racing yoles (fishing boats) with expert seaman hanging from the riggings. It's a thrill of a lifetime.
Scuba Diving
The waters off Ste. Anne, Ilet Ramier, Cap Saloman and St. Pierre are the best waters for diving. To explore the wrecks and underwater gardens at St. Pierre, you must have insurance papers and medical certification. Diamant-Novotel's Sub Diamond Rock Club (Ph: 596-764242) schedules sea packages and daily excursions around Diamond Rock. Tropicasub International Diving Center, in St-Pierre, (Ph: 596-783803); Cressma, Fort-de-France (Ph: 596-613436) Oxygene Blue, Lamentin (Ph: 502578) also supply complete dive packages.
Snorkeling
We found the best snorkeling at the beautiful Anse-Mitan beach. Affaires Maritimes' (Ph: 719005) snorkeling excursions, complete with picnic lunches and excursions on the glass-bottomed Aquarium in Fort-de-France (Ph: 614949) are fun-filled adventures. Snorkeling equipment is found at the hotel resorts and at many of the island beaches.
Tennis
Enthusiasts can contact the Tennis Club of Fort-de-France or La Ligue Regionale de Tennis (Ph: 510800) to arrange a good match against island residents. Many of the island hotels have courts, with some the best at: la Bateliere Hotel & Casino, 8 courts (Ph: 596-61-49-49); Club Mediterranee, Ste. Anne (Ph: 596-76-72-72); Marine Hotel Diamant, Diamant, 2 courts (Ph: 596-764600) and Hotel Meridien Martinique, 2 courts (Ph: 596-660000).
Golf
Golf de l'Imperatrice Josephine, in Trois-Ilets, complete with an English speaking pro, has a beautiful 18-hole course. Call well in advance for starting times (Ph: 596-683281).
Deep-Sea Fishing
Expensive and for the serious-minded fisherman, contact Captain Rene Alric in Case-Pilote, (Ph: 596-788056) who will schedule excursions of up to five days on his Rayon Vert. Bathy's Club (Ph: 596-66000) at the Meridien, charters half-day excursions which include breakfast.
