Getting Around Mexico City

Airport Transportation

Fares to downtown Mexico City: Taxi $10-$14; Van $6: Metro 10 cents. From Benito Juarez Airport the 4 mile trip take 35 minutes by taxi. To be safe, upon entering the main concourse look for Taxi Autorizado booths staffed by employees in yellow jackets. A van service is available, serving most of the main hotels. The least expensive choice, by far, is the metro, but allows no luggage larger than a shoulder bag. Look for the large M marking the entrance.

Metro, Bus & Peseros (Colectivos)

The city Metro system consists of nine lines and is clean, fast , modern and cheap - 10 cents buys a basic ticket or boleto. The trains can be unbearably crowded on weekdays between 4pm and 7pm. Men and women (along with children) are often divided into separate groups at these times. Hours: Mon-Fri. 6am-1am and Sun. 7am-12am. The well-used bus service consists of even-numbered lines running east-west, odd numbered lines running north-south, and extra services on major downtown routes. Exact fare is needed. Peseros are small green and grey mini-buses, servicing passengers along major traffic and tourist routes. The driver waves his hand with fingers extended, indicating the number of vacant seats available.

Taxi

The basic sitio taxis in Mexico City are the plentiful yellow and white or green and grey VW Beetles or Datsuns. They run strictly by the meter, except late at night when the fare should first be negotiated. Tourismo taxis are larger with a hood over the meter and are used for hourly or day trips as well as private sightseeing. Taxis with the words Magna Sin supposedly use a less polluting gasoline.
