Excursions From Veracruz

Veracruz Archeological Sites

Of the two ancient Totanic sites, El Tajin is the older. Encompassing a 150-acre area, it includes 6 temples, ball court and Pyramid of the Niches, each niche representing a day of the year. Open daily and reached by bus from Veracruz in 4.5 hours. Zempoala is the last capital of the Totanacs. Fierce rivals of the Aztecs, they supported and helped Cortes, but were later vanquished by the Spaniards. Buildings include the Great Temple, Temple of Quetzalcoatl and Temple of the Little Faces. Open daily and reached from Veracruz by bus in 30 minutes.

Catemaco

75 miles down the coast from Veracruz is the lovely lake and volcanic region of Catemaco. Lush vegetation and spectacular vistas surround Lake Catemaco. Close to 600 species of birds inhabit the lake environs. Boat trips are readily available and include El Tegal Grotto and the two islands inhabited by monkeys.
