Getting Around Amsterdam

Airport Transportation

Fares to downtown Amsterdam: Taxi $40-$45; Metro$4; Shuttle $10. From Schiphol Airport KLM Airlines operates a hotel shuttle service to many of Amsterdam's deluxe and first class hotels. Your hotel, if not included on the itinerary, is likely to be close by one of the stops. An express train (take the escalator to the Welcome Hall), reaches Central Station in 15 minutes.

Subway & Bus

Other than getting around by bicycle (as the Dutch do) or on foot (the best way to fully absorb Amsterdam), the city is served by a combination of buses, tram-lines and a metro that services the suburbs. Discount tickets such as the Strippenkarte ($7) and the 2-day Dagkaart ($9) are available at Central Station. Regular service stops around midnight, but the Nachtbus (night bus) continues service on the main routes. A day card is also available for the Canalbus water system.

Not surprisingly, there are numerous boat operators throughout Amsterdam. Departures are found opposite the Central Station, and along the Damrak, the Rodkin, and Stadhouderskade. The Museum Boat ticket combines a boat ride with stops by numerous museums. The ticket is good for an entire day and costs about $10. Address: Stationsplein 8.
